A fatal train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel opposition criticisms regarding the speed and handling of the country's major infrastructure initiatives.
The disaster took place on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link constructed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.
“We are going to thoroughly investigate what caused this tragedy,” affirmed the head of state.
The president confirmed that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The leader added plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.
Key Undertaking of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the immediate past president, whose time in office ended the previous year. This rail line was intimately linked to his leadership's economic vision for the southeastern region.
Another massive rail project from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to kickstart the economy of a comparatively less developed part of the country.
Project Execution and Worries
The building of both train projects was managed by the army, marking a dramatic expansion of its responsibilities in civilian infrastructure. They were completed at an rapid speed, beating forecasts to be at least partly launched before the end of that government.
However, this rushed timetable had concurrently fueled ongoing concerns over operational security.
- Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This encompasses an earlier accident this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-deadly derailments.
Appeals for Audit and Pause
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the leader of a primary political opposition called for an prompt suspension in the development and management of all such projects.
This stoppage was suggested until the completion of a comprehensive technical review. The party stated that the tragedy "demands prompt explanations."
In response, the head of state asserted that the train had been functioning in complete adherence to all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would be "responsible" in both the development and management of these vital projects.
