British Designer Antony Price, Celebrated for Creating Looks for David Bowie and Duran Duran, Dies at 80.
The British designer Antony Price, the influential UK-based designer responsible for some of the most iconic looks associated with musical icons like Bowie and members of Roxy Music, as well as Queen Camilla, has sadly died at the age of 80.
His reputation was built on his defined forms and dramatic aesthetics, including the light-hued ensembles that appeared in the iconic band Duran Duran's seminal music video for "Rio".
"In a tribute, they called him a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance online."
This news arrives shortly after he presented his newest line in London, his first in more than 30 years. The performer Lily Allen showcased a dress that paid homage to the iconic black velvet "so-called 'revenge dress'" historically worn by Princess Diana.
A Lasting Legacy
A native of Yorkshire, born in 1945, Price relocated to London in the early 1960s to study at the prestigious Royal College of Art.
Upon completing his studies, he commenced his career designing clothing for men at the company Stirling Copper and was the creator of the form-fitting, button-fly pants that The Rolling Stones' frontman Mick Jagger wore during The Rolling Stones' Gimme Shelter tour in the late sixties.
He founded his own label in 1979 and presented his inaugural collection a year later. The show featured as its opener creations worn by the famed model Jerry Hall, who also wore the bridal gown Price specifically designed for her wedding to Sir Mick Jagger.
Collaborations with Icons
A key creative partner of David Bowie, Price created the iconic jacket the artist wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His signature ability to fuse elements of men's and women's fashion along with his technical proficiency in crafting form-fitting garments cemented his status as a "one-of-a-kind talent," according to the UK's fashion authority.
During the nineties, he began working on ensembles for Camilla, now Queen Consort, such as various looks for her American tour after assuming the title.
With a vocation that covered over fifty years, Price presented his final runway show in London last month in partnership with the design house 16Arlington.
