Scorching conditions and raging bushfires have devastated the parched landscape of Western Australia. As mercury levels forecast to persist soaring above 40C (104F) over the next few days, a severe alert for extreme heat has been declared across a large portion of the southwestern region.

Broad Heatwave Warnings Across the Region

These conditions follow this month's bushfires in New South Wales, which resulted in the loss of properties and fatalities. Severe heatwave warnings have also been issued for later this week in parts of South Australia and New South Wales, as a ridge of atmospheric pressure moves to the east, delivering intense heat to much of the region.

The combination of tinder-dry land and unbroken high temperatures presents a dangerous situation for firefighters.

Global Climatic Events Cause Disruption

In another part of the world, a metropolis was left in darkness recently after strong winds damaged the city’s electrical network, with falling trees bringing down electricity cables. The stormy weather also caused significant transport delays at a major airport, where hundreds of air services were cancelled. Severe damage to electrical infrastructure is anticipated to cause ongoing problems as utility companies scramble to restore power to over 1 million residents.

Atypical Mist Blankets Sunny Region

Meanwhile, a valley famed for its clear skies and abundant sunshine has experienced one of its dullest and foggiest weeks on recorded history. A particular form of fog, which typically lingers for only a short time, has been remarkably extensive and long-lasting this year, keeping the mercury at a major airport under 8C for over a week – the most prolonged period in over three decades. The extended haze has been driven by exceptional autumn rainfall that left the ground waterlogged.
