California's Governor States He Is Evaluating a Presidential Campaign for 2028

The California governor, a well-known Democratic figure, has disclosed that he plans to decide on whether to run for president in 2028 once the 2026 congressional elections conclude.

"Yeah, it would be dishonest if I denied it," Newsom stated when pressed about contemplating a White House bid post the 2026 elections. "That wouldn't be honest. And I can't do that."

The governor's tenure as governor wraps up in the start of 2027, and he is ineligible for re-election. However, he emphasized that any determination is not imminent.

"The future will decide," he added.

Growing Prominence as a Administration Opponent

He has stepped forward as a notable opponent of the former president's team, leveraging his digital presence and advocating for a proposition that would increase the party's representation in Congress in as a counter to Republican redistricting efforts. This strategy has made him a target from political opponents.

Federal Funding Dispute

The former president's secretary of transportation, Sean Duffy, alleged that Newsom is indifferent about Californians in a recent appearance on Fox News. The secretary disclosed a strategy to cut taxpayer dollars from the state and suggested revoking the authority to issue CDLs.

"I plan to withdraw a significant sum from California," Duffy declared, following a this week's deadly accident in California involving an undocumented semi truck driver that led to three deaths and four injuries.

His administration noted that the federal government had renewed the worker's status repeatedly, which allowed him to receive a trucking license under national regulations.

Duffy had previously stated he was withholding additional funds from the state for ignoring English language requirements for CDL holders.

Firm Rebuttal from the Administration

"Ex-reality TV personality, now transportation chief, continues to misunderstand federal law," Newsom's office responded in a last month's comment countering the secretary's comments. "For now, unlike this clown, we'll stick to the facts: California truck drivers had a death rate nearly 40% lower than the national average. The state of Texas – the sole state with a larger number of CDL holders – has a rate almost 50% higher than the state. Statistics are clear. The federal leadership misleads."

Polling Data and Political Future

A recently conducted survey revealed that nearly three-quarters of Democratic voters and a significant portion of the electorate indicated that Newsom should run for president in 2028. After the current administration began, Newsom's favorability has risen to an mean of about one-third from approximately 30%, while his negative ratings has dropped from an mean of previous highs to current figures.

Earlier this year, Newsom stated while traveling several key regions that he had "uncertainty" about his intentions for 2028.

He also referenced his earlier challenges, including being identified as dyslexic at the early childhood.

"The idea that a guy who scored 960 on the SAT, who has ongoing difficulties with text, who was always in the back of the classroom – the fact that this is even suggested is, in and of itself, extraordinary," he commented. "It's anyone's guess? I am eager to see who presents themselves in 2028 and who answers the call. And that's the question for the voters."
