Christantus Uche Fuels Straightforward Crystal Palace Victory at Shelbourne.
Despite embarking on their maiden European adventure, Oliver Glasner's side are learning at a rapid pace. Missing star figures like forward Jean-Philippe Mateta and wing-back Daniel Muñoz, the Eagles departed Dublin with a commanding win that virtually guarantees them a place in the Europa Conference League qualifying rounds.
A further victory in their upcoming match against Finland's KuPS should be enough to secure direct entry to the knockout stages, especially following a previous setback against Strasbourg.
Squad Members Seize the Opportunity
This match provided a chance for some of Palace's lesser-used talent to impress. Christantus Uche, in only his second beginning after joining on loan from Getafe, opened the account with a clinical goal. Striker Eddie Nketiah contributed a another, finding the net for the second consecutive match.
The Shelbourne side that had finished their domestic season were no match against a largely rotated Palace lineup. The Londoners were further depleted by the reports that Mateta and Muñoz are out with leg problems.
Dominance Asserted from the Outset
In spite of heavy rain in Dublin, Palace quickly established dominance. A slick passing sequence in the 11th minute, sparked by Daichi Kamada's clever pass, allowed Nketiah to lay on Uche for a simple tap-in.
Youngster Adam Wharton went close soon after, driving a powerful effort over the bar. Nketiah then claimed for a penalty after bursting into the box, but the referee waved away the protests.
The formerArsenal man didn't need to wait long to find his goal, prodding home from close range after Uche's shot had struck the post.
The home side were clinging on for dear life. Full-back Kameron Ledwidge was lucky to avoid a booking for a couple of robust challenges on Yeremy Pino, before Chris Richards rattled the crossbar with a powerful header from a corner.
Pino Wraps Up the Game
The match was effectively over eight minutes before half-time. Yeremy Pino weaved past a series of weak challenges before calmly slotting a shot past keeper Wessel Speel to extend the lead to 3-0.
Following the break, coach Oliver Glasner took the chance to rest key players like Kamada and Wharton. Replacement Romain Esse almost scoring with his very first touch, but saw his shot blocked.
Esse was incredibly unlucky later on, seeing one shot crash off each posts before being clasped on the line. Uche then missed a sitter of a chance, showing there is still scope for improvement in his game.
The only worry for Palace was a second-half injury to Justin Devenny, who limped off. This paved the way for 17-year-old striker Benji Casey to earn his senior debut, rounding off an otherwise perfect night for the traveling side.
