Democrats Denounce Trump After He Suggests They Should Face Death Penalty
Lawmakers from the Democratic party demonstrated anger after Donald Trump accused a contingent of Democratic legislators of being "betrayers" and asserted they should be detained and sentenced "with execution" following their release of a disputed video.
The Recording That Sparked the Dispute
The clip, released on earlier this week, includes six Democratic congress members who previously served in military or defense capacities.
"Like us, you all swore an oath to protect and support this founding document," the lawmakers declared in the short video. "Currently, the threats to our governing document don't only come from overseas, but from within our own country. Our laws are clear, you can refuse unlawful commands, you can refuse improper directives, you should refuse improper directives. No one has to execute orders that violate the legal system or our founding principles."
Trump's Furious Reply
The video message reportedly provoke a furious response from the previous commander-in-chief.
On the following morning, Trump wrote on his social media platform: "This represents SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these betrayers to our Nation should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."
In an additional message, he wrote: "This constitutes really concerning, and Risky to our United States. Their statements cannot be enabled to stand. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"
In a subsequent publication, he continued: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, subject to punishment by DEATH!" He also reposted a statement that stated: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"
Party Representatives Respond
Following Trump's statements on that day, Top Democrats issued a joint declaration condemning the statements.
"Political violence has no role in this nation," they wrote. "Elected officials who appeared in the video all worked our nation with tremendous patriotism and honor. We clearly censure Donald Trump's disgusting and harmful death threats against elected officials, and urge Republican lawmakers to vigorously do the same."
The Democratic leaders also said that they had been in touch with security officials "to ensure the safety of these officials and their families."
"Donald Trump must without delay take down these radical digital publications and withdraw his aggressive language before he causes harm," the statement added.
Officials' Strong Reaction
The lawmakers who appeared in the video also released a statement.
"We serve as ex-military personnel and security experts who care for this United States and made an vow to defend and uphold the founding document of the United States," they stated. "That oath continues forever, and we plan to maintain it. No warning, pressure, or call for violence will deter us from that important obligation."
"The significant point is that the former president deems it subject to penalty by death for us to repeat the legal requirements," they continued. "Our service members should recognize that we have their backs as they execute their pledge to the constitution and obligation to obey only legal commands. It is not only the right thing to do, but also our duty."
They stated: "The entire nation must unite and censure the ex-president's requests for our murder and partisan aggression. This is a moment for moral clarity."
More Partisan Reactions
The Opposition leader also condemned Trump's statements and shared on digital platforms: "We must be absolutely clear: the President of the United States is calling for the execution of elected officials."
He continued: "This represents an clear THREAT. Every Senator, each house member, every American – regardless of party – should censure this without delay and unconditionally."
The Conservative official justified Trump's assertion that the Democrats had participated in "sedition", labeling the video as "extremely improper", stating: "This represents very harmful, you have important representatives of the legislature advising military personnel to ignore directives, I think that represents unprecedented in US history."
The Republican leader also according to sources stated to the press that in what he examined of Trump's messages, Trump was "defining the violation of rebellion" but that "attorneys have to examine the terminology and determine all that."
Executive Branch Reaction
During a executive branch meeting on later that day, when questioned by a journalist, "Would the president want to execute congressional representatives?", the executive branch representative responded: "Absolutely not."
"It's important to note about what the president is reacting to," the representative stated. "There are sitting members of the US Congress who worked together to orchestrate a video message to members of the US military, to serving soldiers urging them to disobey the president's lawful orders."
She added: "The integrity of our defense system depends on the command structure, and if that system is violated, it can cause people getting killed, it can result in chaos, and that is exactly what these members of Congress ... are basically supporting."
