The EU could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the United States on five Europeans involved in combating online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’

European leaders such as the French president accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans targeted figures that were central to campaigns to introduce legislation regulating US-based technology firms.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce American platforms to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote a senior US official online. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in criticizing the decision.

The bans were imposed this week on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

The DSA is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders argue the rules are necessary to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.
