We are analyzing video footage and photographs shared this morning that show the aftermath of a reported vehicle-borne explosive explosion that authorities in Russia state fatally injured a high-ranking soldier in Moscow.
Officials in Russia stated that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov was in the car that detonated and that he later died of his injuries. A probe is under way.
The initial step to verify the location of where the images were from relied on posts saying the explosion occurred on Yasenevaya Street in the southern district of the Russian capital.
We used street-view imagery on Google Maps and the Russian search engine Yandex to match the unique yellow hue of a adjacent apartment building captured in the video.
Identifying other buildings, streetlights and the road configuration verified where the pictures were taken.
Additionally, we verified that the video clips were new and that the images had not undergone manipulated.
