Israelis mark two-year anniversary of October 7th incident as Gaza ceasefire talks continue
Israelis have assembled across the country to commemorate two years since the Hamas-initiated assault on October 7th, 2023, as discussions continued in the neighboring country over a resolution to the hostilities in the Gaza Strip.
The attack resulted in more than 1,200 people losing their lives and 251 others captured back to Gaza as captives. It was the single most lethal day for Jewish people since the Second World War.
Israel reacted by initiating a defensive operation in Gaza which has claimed more than 67,000 people, according to the territory's Hamas-administered health ministry. Its figures are seen as accurate by the UN and other world agencies.
"Our violent adversaries have hit us hard, but they have not overcome us," the prime minister stated on that day.
He also pledged to "achieve all the objectives of the war: the homecoming of all the captured, the removal of the Hamas government and the assurance that Gaza will never again present a risk to Israel".
Memorial Ceremonies Across Israel
The national leadership rescheduled official remembrance events until October 16th - after the completion of the festive season - but events still took place throughout the country on Tuesday.
A commemorative event for the relatives of Israelis who died in the Hamas attack was conducted in Tel Aviv. Organized by the affected families, it was televised on Israeli TV networks.
Some time earlier, a minute's silence was observed throughout the country.
Negotiation Talks in Egypt
Meanwhile, both sides' delegations convened in the Egyptian Red Sea resort of the negotiation venue for a continuing round of mediated discussions to review the conditions of the agreement.
A high-ranking representative involved in the negotiations indicated that an night meeting of negotiations began at 7 PM local time.
The representative stated the morning session concluded without tangible results, because of disagreements over the proposed Israeli withdrawal maps from Gaza and over assurances Hamas wants to guarantee Israel does not resume combat after the opening period of the arrangement.
He added that the talks are "tough and have still not achieve any real breakthrough," but noted that mediators are working hard to reduce the disparities between the two sides.
Essential Matters in Discussions
- A permanent halt to fighting
- The exchange of the hostages still detained by Hamas for Palestinian prisoners from Gaza
- The pullout of troops from Gaza
- Measures for assistance provision
- After-conflict administration of the territory
Public Feeling
In the city's public square earlier, 29-year-old a woman - whose brother survived the attack on the Nova music festival, where many attendees were killed and numerous more were taken hostage by Hamas gunmen - shared: "Nowhere feels like home any longer and until all the hostages return not a single person will be secure."
"When we see everybody home once more, we can breathe again. Then we can start to heal," she continued.
In front of the prime minister's official dwelling in Jerusalem, people congregated to demonstrate their support for the relatives of the captives. Israel states 48 continue in confinement in Gaza, 20 of whom are thought to be living.
Demonstrator a participant explained: "It's necessary do whatever arrangement required for the hostages to be released. But we really want guarantees that we will be protected."
Opinion polls now regularly indicate that about the majority of Israeli citizens want the war to finish in return for the release of the hostages.
Gaza Situation
At the location of the music event, mourners assembled to honor the dead.
From the site, the boom of Israeli air strikes and explosions could be detected just a short distance away in Gaza, where witnesses indicated the intense Israeli bombardment persisted.
In the urban center, attacks were reported in the dawn of that day in the west side neighborhood, area and zone neighbourhoods and in the east side area of the community, as well the camp to the north-west.
"Once the evening comes, the anxiety appears with it," evacuated urban resident a local woman, whose 17-year-old son was killed by an Israeli bombing previously, explained.
"My family are terrified of the bombings. During nighttime we are sleeping together, clinging, especially my smallest child who puts his face on me all night."
"Constantly we monitor the reports to see developments. And I'm afraid that this ceasefire will not be completed and that the war will come back to us."
Humanitarian Situation
Al-Shifa hospital in Gaza City said it had accepted the bodies of six people by the midday, including a trio who lost their lives in an Israeli strike in the south part area.
Another medical facility in the southern city of that area said another two dead people had been delivered. A person was died by Israeli forces while looking for aid to the southern area, medical staff said.
