A defense official has stated that the MoD is currently investigating the potential security risks associated with Chinese vehicles, and personnel have been instructed to avoid talking about secret information in any vehicles.
Security Advice for Defence Personnel
In a recently aired interview on a radio station, a defence minister addressed claims that MoD staff have been told not to discuss classified information while riding in Chinese vehicles.
He said that the ministry is “looking into” cars from China within its fleets, however noted that security is a issue in all modern cars.
Our department has a fleet of tens of thousands of cars in the Ministry of Defence and those vehicles account for a tiny fraction.
But regardless of if you’re driving a Chinese car or a car from another country, our instruction to our people is to avoid connecting MoD technology into their vehicle, not to have discussions at a classified classification in any kind of vehicle, due to the growing threats of eavesdropping that exist in all vehicle, to restrict those confidential talks in protected areas. That’s a wise and sensible thing for anyone concerned about security.
After it was put to him that it would be prudent for the ministry to stop using every Chinese vehicles, Pollard responded: That is precisely what we’re investigating at the present time.”
Broader Security Background
The revelation comes as reports from Scandinavian countries have warned the United Kingdom to the presence of dual-use shutdown mechanisms in Chinese-made electric buses, which could enable the Chinese government to switch off buses and bring chaos to public transit.
Additionally, a Russian intelligence vessel was reportedly shining laser beams at RAF aircrew, labeled a “extremely risky” act by government representatives.
