New York Jets Coach Glenn Confident Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After NYC Shooting

Jets head coach Aaron Glenn mentioned that he has been in contact with defensive back Kris Boyd and feels certain the player will recover well after being shot in midtown Manhattan in the early hours of Sunday.

Glenn shared that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “in good spirits” during their recent conversation.

“That gives me comfort, is that he’s feeling positive,” Glenn said Wednesday. “His wife and his kid, they’re in good spirits and he is expected to recover fully.”

The coach did not know when Boyd might be released the medical facility, where his condition is described as critical but stable.

“Don’t know just yet,” he added. “But I will say this, just talking to him, he felt really upbeat. And again, that’s what gives me comfort, given his positive frame of mind and he’s talking that way.”

NYPD released surveillance images Monday of a suspect in the incident involving Boyd. A motive for the shooting remains under investigation and authorities said it is unknown if Boyd was the intended victim. No one else was hurt were reported.

The incident occurred in the early morning on Sunday morning near MSG and the bustling tourist spot. Boyd, twenty-nine, was taken to a local hospital after sustaining an abdominal gunshot wound, police said. The shooter fled the scene.

Glenn mentioned Boyd has been in his thoughts “a ton” since learning of the incident. He further stated that Boyd and his wife recently welcomed a baby.

“My initial concern, he has a new baby,” Glenn said. “And I’m thinking about his wife, I’m thinking about his kid and I hope he recovers fully. And that’s the only thing that really went through my mind.
“A certain process is underway, that I won’t detail, but I’m happy at the fact that he will recover excellently.”

Boyd hasn’t played in the present campaign, his first with the Jets, after being placed on injured reserve on August 18 with a shoulder injury that needed an operation.

He joined the Jets as a free agent in spring and was projected as an important component of a revamped special teams unit under the coach and special teams coordinator Chris Banjo. However, he got hurt during preseason drills on early August and had to be helped off.

Boyd has stayed involved with the squad all season long while healing from his surgery.

“He’s been a part of what we’re doing,” Glenn said. “In fact, he attends every game. He’s fully engaged. Given his status as a special teams standout, he’s done a really good job of helping the other guys we have.”

Boyd, from Texas, played his first four seasons with the Vikings after getting drafted in the seventh round by the Vikings out of UT in 2019. He signed with the Arizona Cardinals in 2023 and moved to Houston’s squad later that season. Boyd signed a one-year contract worth $1.6m with New York in March.
