Some groups on the opposing sides who offer only discontent: The government is proceeding with the job of financial revitalization.

At the budget last week, we made the right choices for Britain, lowering power bills with savings of £150 on utilities, defending public healthcare and tackling the scourge of child poverty by eliminating the two-child cap. We also ensured that the revenue we raised through taxes was done fairly, with each person chipping in but those with the largest means paying what they owe.

Because of the policies implemented, the budget created a more stable economic environment, driving down inflation and sovereign debt returns. This is essential for securing our public services, when one pound in every ten expended by government goes on loan repayments.

Building on Economic Foundations

The announcement strengthens the action we have already taken to enhance economic performance: allocating £120 billion in additional funding in such things as roads, rail and energy; enacting the biggest planning reforms in a generation to favor construction, not impediments; advocating for the growth of Heathrow and Gatwick; and establishing trading partnerships with the EU, India and the US.

Taken together, these have allowed us to exceed our growth forecasts.

Revitalizing Our Country

As I outlined at the party conference, the government’s purpose is nothing less than the renewal of our economy, our communities and our state. Through this approach, we will end decline and reestablish confidence in our country.

We will challenge those on the political extremes who only offer complaints and whose approach would lead to continued weakening. I want to emphasize, ramping up deficit spending or reimposing spending cuts – that is the politics of decline and I refuse to countenance it.

A Comprehensive Growth Mission

During an address next week, I will frame the economic measures within the broader financial revitalization on which the government will be evaluated upon conclusion of this parliament.

To accomplish the nationwide rejuvenation we seek, we must do more to promote development, to tackle inactivity among young people and to seek enhanced global partnership with our trading partners.

Regulatory Reform Initiative

Our development strategy will include a reinforced attention on sweeping away unnecessary regulation. Often it has been those on the left who have preferred controls, but there is nothing advanced in regulations which only function to boost the cost of living for the poorest, to hinder financial expansion unnecessarily, or stop a progressive administration achieving its aims.

Hence the rationale I am asking the business secretary to confront the variety of pointless gold-plating and unnecessary red tape that increase expenses and get in the way of our industrial strategy.

Benefits System Overhaul

Financial revitalization likewise requires that we must continue to overhaul social security. We assumed control of a dysfunctional apparatus that resulted in impoverished youth going hungry and which discarded youth as too sick to work.

We cannot tolerate either part of that unsuccessful conservative approach. Hence the reason we will do more to assist youth in realizing their capabilities.

Because if you are ignored in your early career, if you are denied the assistance you need to overcome your mental health issues, or if you are merely dismissed because you are neurodivergent or disabled, then it can trap you in a cycle of worklessness and dependency for decades.

This creates economic costs, is bad for our productivity, but considerably more crucially, it takes away opportunity and ignores potential. Any Labour government worthy of the name must not disregard this.

Hence the explanation we have commissioned former health secretary to make practical recommendations to help young people with health conditions access work, training or education – ensuring they are supported to prosper rather than marginalized.

Global Commerce Improvement

Ultimately, we must take further action to help our businesses conduct global commerce. No plausible financial outlook for Britain that does not position us as an open, trading economy.

We need to acknowledge the reality that the poorly executed departure agreement significantly hurt our economy. It isn't necessary to have a PhD in economics to know that establishing superfluous business impediments with your biggest trading partner will hinder development and boost prices.

Thus an aspect of our economic renewal will be maintaining progress in the direction of a closer trading relationship with the EU. When we can access more affordable sustenance, improve development and produce work opportunities by having a closer relationship with the EU, we should.

A Serious Plan for Serious Times

A budget based on fair choices for Britain must be reinforced with commitment to achieve the economic renewal that the country needs.

By delivering a big, bold long-term plan, not a set of short-term remedies, we will renew Britain. We must become again a substantial population, with a important leadership, capable together of doing difficult things to reclaim command of our destiny.

Through maintaining a distinct purpose to renew our economy, our communities and our state, we will execute the modification we committed to – and then be judged on it at the next election.
