The Details Known Regarding the Victims of the Bondi Beach Terror Attack
A minimum of 16 lives perished and over 40 sustained injuries when assailants shot at a Hanukkah celebration at Bondi Beach, an incident local police are describing as a act of terrorism.
According to the most recent information, officials have stated the number of fatalities remains at 16, encompassing one of the suspected attackers. Furthermore, 42 people with injuries were transported to medical facilities.
Those who died have not yet been officially identified, but investigators think their ages span from 10 and 87 years old.
Below are the individuals who have been named to date.
Eli Schlanger
Originally from London clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.
Described as a father of five children, he worked as the associate rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Family members and acquaintances spoke of him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very warm outgoing person who was dedicated to assisting others”.
“How can a happy rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a family member asked.
Schlanger and his wife celebrated the birth of their newest son in October.
Alexander Kleytman
Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, as stated by his wife.
She told the moments before the attack, saying they had been standing together when the gunfire started. “He shielded me because he wished to be near me,” she recalled.
The husband and wife were both Holocaust survivors, having experienced unspeakable terror in their childhood. They had subsequently relocated to Australia from Eastern Europe.
Dan Elkayam
The French authorities have announced that French national Dan Elkayam is among the dead.
Publicly, a senior official expressed that France stood with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.
“This despicable act is a new, tragic manifestation of a revolting outpouring of hatred against Jews that we must put a stop to,” the statement read.
One Child
A young girl, aged 10 who was taken to the Sydney Children’s Hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, according to police reports.
One Israeli Citizen
One victim from Israel was also killed during the attack, according to multiple sources citing the Israeli government.
Those Injured
From the 42 people transported to hospitals, a significant number are still under care, with five in critical condition. Those hurt comprise two police officers who attended the scene.
A wounded man is a member of the public who attempted to intervene to confront one of the gunmen. Described as a local hero, he sustained gunshot wounds but is in stable condition in hospital.
Arsen Ostrovsky
One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. It has been reported he was injured and is receiving treatment in hospital.
Communicating, he recounted the scene as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also noted the response of those who rushed to help. He said he believed it was a “miracle” he was alive.
Evan Zlatkis
Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was another casualty in the shooting. He said he listened to “a large number” of gunshots.
“I thought it was rubber bullets, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I sustained a gunshot wound. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
