The Eurovision Song Contest Used to Be a Campy Joy – But It Has Become a Cynical Way to Whitewash War.

A recent acronym emerged several months following the onset of Israel’s bombardment of Gaza. Referred to as WCNSF, it means “Injured child with no living relatives”. This acronym is found only in Gaza, according to medical experts like paediatricians. Normally, it is unusual for medical staff to care for a young patient who has been bereaved of their entire family. But, there has been absolutely nothing ordinary about the genocide in Gaza, where complete genealogies have been wiped out and the number of young amputees is greater than that of any other region in the world. Nothing normal about numerous doctors coming back from a landscape of rubble with reports of children being systematically aimed at.

A Hell on Earth Despite a Announced Cessation of Hostilities

Gaza remains hell on earth. Essential medical supplies are not getting in those in need, and groups like Amnesty International assert that atrocities are ongoing. Officials rejects these allegations, consistent with how it disavows each claim it is implicated in. Yet as young survivors are now freezing in improvised encampments, there is a piece of uplifting information: apparently nothing is going to stop the Eurovision from continuing with its declared purpose of “unity and cultural exchange.” Eurovision will continue to offer a prestigious stage for Israel, even though several European countries have now pulled out in protest. Since this, it seems, is what international harmony resembles.

Historically, Eurovision excluded Russia from competing in 2022 because of the “unprecedented crisis in Ukraine”. But the crisis in Gaza appears to be treated differently.

Contradictory Principles

Disregard the reality that Israel was alleged to have used unfair vote practices last year in what could be seen as an effort to politicise Eurovision. Set aside the news that a toddler was allegedly fatally struck in Gaza just days ago. Pay no mind to the evidence that settler violence and forced displacement in the West Bank have increased dramatically. Disregard the condition that foreign reporters are still denied unfettered access in Gaza. All of this, it would seem, should be permitted to obstruct of Eurovision’s much-touted ethos of unity.

The Pageant Proceeds Against a Backdrop of Unimaginable Suffering

The contest reaches its seventieth anniversary next year – almost double the projected longevity of a person in Gaza at present. The event will proceed, but it will likely never recapture the whimsical pleasure it was formerly known for. An institution that initially championed peace has now become a transparent instrument to provide a cultural veneer for conflict.
