The former vice-president Questions Whether Bullying from Trump Influenced Bill Gates' Climate Reversal

Al Gore has proposed that fear of receiving criticism from President Trump may have prompted the Microsoft founder to step back on his environmental position.

Describing Trump as “the most dishonest leader the U.S. has seen”, Gore alerted that the president’s endorsement of oil and gas and withdrawal from clean power is “badly damaging” the American economic system.

Environmental Harm and Financial Consequences

In an discussion at the UN climate conference in Belém, Gore remarked, “The president’s currently causing a lot of damage to the environment. Perhaps the largest impact he’s doing is to the United States itself.”

He emphasized that the Asian nation is now selling green technology with a total sales figure that exceeds all fossil fuel exports from the United States, a pattern that is accelerating significantly.

Bill Gates’ Controversial Shift

The tech billionaire, previously a leading advocate in climate action, recently suggested for pushing the climate crisis down the international agenda, to focus on global wellness.

Gore voiced bewilderment at this shift, saying, “The notion of delaying on climate again puzzled environmental experts that I know and respect.”

“Yes, the president approves. That may be what the billionaire aimed at.”

Gore observed that after Trump’s re-election, Gates fired most of his climate staffers, visited the presidential residence, and lavished praise on Trump.

Concern Over Backlash

Gore proposed that Gates, like other ultra-wealthy business people, may be concerned of facing retaliation by Trump. “It’s possible that he is really worried that Trump will bully him,” Gore stated.

Trump reacted to Gates’ reversal with praiseful social media posts.

Gore added, “The only rave review of what he put out last week was from Donald Trump. Yeah, Trump loves it. That may be what Gates was shooting for.”

Rejecting a False Choice

Gore emphasized that framing the climate crisis and global health crisis as opposing choices is wrong.

“The idea that there is a binary choice between wellness and the environment has been roundly rejected by virtually every scientist in this area,” he explained.

“It’s literally insane that governments are requiring taxpayers to subsidise the destruction of our collective tomorrow.”

Gore highlighted that the Lancet published a study on the same day as Gates’ announcement, detailing the significant wellness impacts of inaction on climate.

Advocating for Smarter Investments

Rather than diverting funds from environmental initiatives, Gore argued that Gates should advocate for repurposing the massive sums spent on oil and gas support toward wellness and environmental innovations.

“Accelerating solutions to the environmental emergency is one of the single most effective ways to improve healthcare in the world,” he stated.

Defending the UN Climate Process

Gore robustly defended the annual Cop meetings, noting that they accomplish far more than they are recognized for.

“These global meetings serves as a nucleus for businesses and organizations that assemble annually,” he said. “Many of them come up with their own agreements that move things forward.”

“These international meetings is one of the key factors that the sustainability revolution has shifted into high gear.”

He added that industries and governments are pushing ahead with innovations and adopting renewable energy and other eco-friendly projects.

Positive Progress and Generational Change

Gore highlighted what he sees as a “generational change” in the U.S., with numerous citizens turning towards climate action even as the federal government undoes them.

He warned that Trump might face a “less obsequious” Congress following recent voting losses for GOP contenders.

“There’s a completely false view circulating that in some way we are losing ground.”

Gore praised Zohran Mamdani for his effective campaign for mayor of New York, saying that while he disagreed with some of his ideas, his political skills were impressively on display.

Highlighting Climate Impacts

At the summit, Gore showed attendees with a slide show of devastation caused by the environmental emergency.

Standing before a huge projection screen showing images of recent disasters exacerbated by climate change, Gore declared, “It’s completely irrational that we are allowing this to continue.”

He spoke passionately while showing visuals of record drought in the Amazon, Greenland shedding its ice, and destructive storms in Southeast Asia, Jamaica, South America, the Philippines, and the U.S..

“How long are we going to do nothing and keep increasing temperatures so that these types of disasters get even worse?” he questioned.

Adaptation, Mitigation, and Realism

Gore stressed the need to prepare and prevent, but cautioned that if we allow this insanity—treating the atmosphere as a dump—some impacts will be very difficult to cope with.

Promoting Climate Trace

His main focus at the conference has been to advocate for the emissions mapping initiative, which monitors planet-heating emissions and air pollutants causing health problems worldwide.

“There is great enthusiasm about these new tools,” Gore said. “We possess the technology and the implementation strategies. Some people think we lack the political will, but as I like to remind people, political will is a renewable resource.”
