The Latest Casual Playlist Ignites Heated Discussions Regarding AI Players, Experience Points, and Queue Times
Over the weekend, the game developers launched a fresh playlist called Casual Breakthrough. To put it simply, this mode resembles the regular Breakthrough setup but includes a few notable adjustments:
- Each team has just 8 human participants, with the rest made up of AI-controlled opponents.
- Actions done by human gamers grant full XP, while bot actions offer reduced XP.
- Just a pair of maps are available: Cairo Siege and Empire State.
- Elements like Player tags, accolades, and career stat updates are disabled.
In short, this mode lives up to its name: it offers a laid-back take of Breakthrough. On the surface, one could assume it's a good idea, since it provides additional choices for players looking for alternative methods to have fun with the title. But, if video games has shown one thing, it's that not everyone will be happy. In other words, many Battlefield 6 fans are upset.
Player Responses: From Fury to Support
"Gamers prefer human opponents. Avoid making the errors of your competitors," reads one reply to the mode reveal. "Truly disappointing concept," says a different user. At the same time, on the Battlefield subreddit, one user notes, "It's unclear where we are headed with this title," while someone else details all the issues they consider to be broken in the game: "Fix bugs, fix drone glitch, fix IVF rockets, fix [the] bloom after sprinting bug, improve hit detection. We do not require this AI-heavy playlist."
However, for every complaint, there are players sharing how much they're liking the new mode. "It's very fun to practice, human participants keep it from being a total farmfest but it's very relaxed," says one Reddit comment. "This subreddit doesn't understand that there are players who have lives and don't play this game 24/7. Let them strike a balance," adds a different comment. One reply on Twitter clarifies that as they're "a parent gamer with limited time, this is perfect for me," while another praises the mode for "avoiding intense competition."
Valid Concerns and Community Feedback
All that said, players have constructive reasons to criticize the new mode. Some users have pointed out that it could increase queue times more extended for different playlists because of the large amount of options currently available. On a similar note, some areas already encounter AI-filled matches in the current modes. It also seems somewhat counterintuitive that the mode won't start without a minimum number of human gamers, even though it primarily centers on combat against bots.
Finally, a major grievances is that Battlefield Portal was promised to provide full XP, even against bots, but that was removed when they attempted to eliminate bot farms from the mode. So this new playlist feels like the community meeting them halfway, as per a Reddit comment. A different user describes this mode as the developers "dropping the ball significantly, I had great enjoyment in the first couple of days, what prompted them to adjust it?"
Future Prospects: Will Changes Occur?
If the development team has proven anything to date with Battlefield 6, it is that they're listening and responding to player input. Assignments being too difficult got fixed rapidly, as did the required Redsec challenges. Chances are that, if their data shows this recent mode is underperforming to their standards, they will not hesitate to change it again.
