The Porcine Pardon: Hog Named 6-7 Spared by Miami Dade County Leader.
It might not have been at the equivalent scale as granting clemency to festive fowl, but the Miami-Dade County mayor conducted a presidential-style act this week by ritually sparing the life of a pig named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava carried out the annual tradition at the Cuban-themed Latin Cafe 2000 in the core of Miami’s Little Havana neighborhood.
“This pig is innocent. She is worthy of this pardon. She has committed zero crimes,” declared Levine Cava in a speech with obvious nods to the extraordinary and sizable number of pardons issued from the start of the commencement of a new presidential term.
“Unless you count eating six or seven apples per day,” she went on. “I hope she experiences a prosperous future away from worry.”
This ceremony, which both honors and questions the local cultural practice of feasting on pork during the holidays, was established to mirror the annual turkey pardoning at the White House.
The animal, provided by a Coral Gables firefighter, was named for the modern linguistic fad of young people yelling “six-seven” – inspired by a rap song lyric – often seemingly at random. The trend became so widespread that a leading lexicon site recently named “six-seven” its top term for the year.
A Peaceful Retirement
The pardoned swine is now set to enjoy its days at a rural sanctuary “away from grills and cookware”, according to the event’s official press release.
“The pig pardon has become a beloved tradition to open the holiday season,” said the event host, in a decidedly positive message.
“It represents the spirit of Miami: happy, diverse, and rooted in traditions that bring people together. Annually, we are proud to celebrate tradition and kindness in a way distinctively Miamian.”
Attendees enjoyed a vegetarian menu of spinach fritters and Cuban coffee as they marked the swine's new lease on life.
