The retailer's Shiny Pokémon Scarlet and Violet Legendary Pokémon Giveaway Continues to Encounter Problems

In late September, The Pokémon Company and Nintendo announced a joint event with GameStop. Until October 15, Glittering editions of the iconic legendary Pokémon from Pokémon Scarlet and Violet were distributed at physical GameStop stores in the United States and at EB Games in New Zealand and Australia. Participating stores in additional nations such as Japan and France were also added in the campaign.

Early Troubles and Supply Issues

However, the giveaway got off to a rocky start—Pokémon fans stated that their nearby shops had run out of codes in the period before the giveaway. Now, midway into the promotional period, GameStop has restocked codes, but chances are your local store has already run out.

Due to overwhelming demand, the first wave of complimentary Shiny Koraidon and Miraidon codes were snapped up rapidly.

On Saturday, October 4, GameStop declared a replenishment of codes via social media. Their announcement noted that they had collaborated with The Pokémon Company to make more codes available, but there is a limitation. "We have received from Pokémon a restricted quantity of receipt codes, around 50 per location."

Scalping and Resale Problems

Initially, stores were given fifty codes, but they were rapidly depleted. Even with the event restricting codes to one per person, some online auction posts surfaced with multiple codes for sale. That's remained true for the new round of codes. One of the top replies on X stated, "These codes right?" alongside screenshots of online sales for the codes, with one listing having multiple available.

Mixed Experiences for Fans

Certain fans were able to snag codes over the weekend from their nearby shops, while others weren't so lucky. "Waiting on 3rd chance now. Just called my GameStop. They’re out of codes (again)," a fan remarked, before fellow enthusiasts came forward and gave them spare codes for the shiny legendary Pokémon.

Unanswered Questions

Why the Shiny box legendaries weren't earned through a Tera Raid battle or distributed digitally via Mystery Gift is still unclear. At present, you must visit your nearest retailer and pray they have codes left if you desire a Shiny Koraidon or Shiny Miraidon.
