Three-time NBA MVP Nikola Jokic endured a "heartbreaking" injury to his knee as the Denver Nuggets lost by a score of 147-123 at the Miami Heat.

Jokic sustained the injury in the latter stages of the opening half following an unintentional contact with teammate Jones.

Jones landed on the footwear of the big man, who promptly collapsed to the floor grabbing his knee.

The veteran player, that leads the NBA this season in boards and assists, posted a score of 21 points and eight dimes in the game before incurring the problem.

He will have an scan on Tuesday to determine the seriousness of the issue.

"Right away, Jokic understood something was wrong," said Nuggets coach Adelman.

"This happens in professional sports. Any player who suffers an injury, it's gut-wrenching, especially somebody as talented as him. More information will come on Tuesday."

"We'll move on as a team. Of course, currently, I am focused just about Jokic personally and the frustration of experiencing something like that."
