Seven-time Grand Slam title holder Venus Williams has secured a wild-card entry for the Australian Open, which kicks off on January 18 in Melbourne.

A Landmark Comeback to Melbourne Park

Tournament officials announced on Friday that the 45-year-old icon will make a return at the tournament venue a staggering 28 years after her debut. During 1998, she defeated her younger sister Serena in the early stage before exiting in the quarter-finals to fellow American Lindsay Davenport.

Preparing for the Australian Summer

The tennis star had earlier stated in November her plans to compete in New Zealand's Auckland Classic, where she also received a wild card, a fortnight prior to the Melbourne event. Organizers noted that Williams is scheduled to play a tournament in Australia's Hobart International a following week, immediately prior to the start of play at the main venue.

Her last appearance in the city was in the year 2021, and she has been a finalist in the singles competition on two separate instances, falling short against Serena in the championship matches of 2003 and 2017.

"I’m excited to be back in the country and eagerly anticipating playing during the summer season," Venus stated. "I have experienced so many incredible moments there, and I’m grateful for the chance to return to a venue that has meant so much to my professional journey."

Williams' career statistics at Melbourne Park stands at an impressive 54 wins and 21 defeats. The upcoming edition will represent the twenty-second occasion she has appeared in the main draw.

Officials indicated that Williams is poised to be the most senior female player to take part in an Open's singles competition, surpassing the record formerly set by Japanese Kimiko Date, who was 44 when she lost in the opening round at the venue in 2015.
