Vince Gilligan Shares He Knows How Pluribus Will Conclude... For Now.
The acclaimed writer-producer could not have predicted that Pluribus would emerge as a breakout success. “God bless the fans,” he remarks. “It was unexpected the show being as talked about as it is, and it makes me thrilled beyond words.”
With the first season of the hit series coming to an end—and a second season officially in the works—the writers' room recently discussed the fan response and whether it will influence the narrative path of Pluribus.
About the Tremendous Viewer Reception
It would be easy to get swayed by the widespread acclaim and audience predictions surrounding Pluribus. He is making a conscious effort to avoid both.
“The experience is akin to constantly eating something incredibly sweet and being in a state of bliss,” he describes. “It's wonderful, but I get wind of it through word of mouth, and that's on purpose. Not once have I Googled myself, nor do I ever plan to. Not because I don't care. It's a rabbit hole I know I would fall into and then I'd be pooping in a five gallon bucket from the hardware store and I'd never leave my living room.”
Regardless of his concerted efforts, there’s it's impossible to ignore the overwhelmingly positive response to the series. The only approach for the writers is to accept it graciously and try not to let it influence the direction of the show.
“It is not our goal to change the plot,” says co-executive producer Alison Tatlock. “The plot we develop is not impacted by online forums.”
“It's wiser to keep our focus on the work,” he chimes in.
The Central Mystery: Will Vince Gilligan Know the Ending of Pluribus?
So if Gilligan and his team are not listening by fan response, does that mean they already know how Pluribus will reach its endpoint? Essentially yes… in a way.
“There are some interesting ideas about how the story could conclude,” Gilligan says. “however, we remain prepared to discard a decent plan for a better idea. This approach has served us in well on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We throw stuff out when we conceive of something superior and I suspect we'll be doing that.”
On the other hand, if all else fails, executive producer Gordon Smith has a rather amusing idea to serve as a last resort.
“I constantly suggest that everything takes place within a snow globe, and that we'll reveal the snow globe and that's where they've been all along,” Smith jokes, “but no one is buying it.”
Then again, why not reference the legendary finales?
“My dream is Carol to wake up in bed next to Bob Newhart,” he jokes.
Pluribus is streaming now on Apple TV.
