When Beachgoers Escaped Danger, Widely-Shared Picture Shows Rescuer Running ‘Pedal to the Metal’ Towards the Site.

Alexandra Ching, a permanent local of Bondi, views the renowned beach as her back yard. On that particular weekend night, she, like many neighbors, noticed cracking sounds reverberating around the neighbourhood.

“We all thought the same, but I thought it was still too bright and there was nothing visible,” she explains. She left her residence, she saw people “pouring up Bondi Road”. The looks they wore told her a crisis was unfolding.

As she stood on the road, speaking to a couple who had rushed up the hill in their swimwear, she noticed someone moving up from behind. This turned out to be a rescuer, dashing in the direction of Bondi barefoot from the adjacent Tamarama beach – roughly 1.5km – while carrying a defibrillator.

“I noticed a person utter ‘excuse me’, and when I spun around I just saw this streak in blue,” she recounts. “He was just flying past. He was alone heading in the opposite way that all the others was trying to flee, and hauling that sizeable pack and without footwear … He was sprinting at something that surely every fibre in your being would tell you to move in the other direction.

“Without a second thought, but just fully pedal to the metal sprinting.”

A Powerful Moment of Courage Amidst Tragedy

The photograph that Ching snapped of the rescuer, since identified as Jackson Doolan, rapidly circulated as one of many acts of valour in the following of the tragic event.

Andy Reid, another lifeguard, noted that Doolan, called “Jacko”, sprinted from Tamarama beach to assist the other members at Bondi, as well as to help surf lifesavers, officers and medical teams treating dozens of the injured.

Local Response and Solidarity

Doolan’s story was a single example among several to be shared by the community, with the beach facility adjacent to the location of the violence transforming into a impromptu treatment center. Reports indicate that other team members were also seen taking action, including going into the water to rescue people needing help.

Following the events, statements of support were shared. A social media message shared appreciation for the responders who exhibited that “compassion will always overcome darkness”.

The group of lifeguards issued a statement, noting they were “processing what occurred”.

“Thank you all for your supportive words and encouragement. We are deeply moved by the care for our team,” the organization stated. “Eventually, we will share our stories in the belief that it helps those affected.”

Local Government Recognition

Waverley council, the local authority that oversees many full-time beach safety officers, remarked that the crew acted heroically from the second the violence began through to late that nighttime.

“We have heard so many powerful accounts, but the viral picture of Jackson Doolan, sprinting from Tamarama to Bondi with a medical device so he could help preserve life is extraordinary,” commented a mayor.

“The team demonstrate altruism every day in ensuring our internationally renowned shores protected for the public, but what we observed on that evening should be highly praised.

“While we mourn and grapple with the terror of this brutal and barbaric tragedy, I think it is crucial that we consider just how much positivity we have witnessed in the midst of such darkness.”
