Strong cold-season winds brought walls down upon fragile shelters housing people uprooted by conflict in Gaza, claiming the lives of at least 4 people. This tragedy underscores the dangerous situation that continue after over two years of intense airstrikes and critical lack of humanitarian assistance.

Ceasefire Provides No Relief from Harsh Elements

While a ceasefire has been in effect since last fall, aid groups state that residents do not have the adequate housing required to survive recurring cold-weather events.

Medical staff at Gaza City's largest medical facility, which took in the bodies, said on this week that the deceased include a pair of adult females, a girl, and a male adult.

In a separate incident, the Gaza health ministry announced on Tuesday that a one-year-old boy succumbed of extreme cold overnight.

"International actors has enabled us to experience loss of life in every possible way," stated Bassel Hamouda following the funeral. "While it is correct the bombing may have paused for now, but we have witnessed every conceivable cause of fatality in the world in the Gaza Strip."

Family Crushed in Shelter Collapse

According to Shifa hospital, 3 members of a one family — elderly a man, his 15-year-old granddaughter, and his daughter-in-law — were fatally injured when an eight-metre tall wall collapsed on top of their tent in a coastal area of the city. At least 5 others were injured in the incident.

Their relatives on Tuesday started clearing the rubble that had buried their family and rebuilding the temporary homes for survivors.

Humanitarian Efforts and Ongoing Crisis

United Nations agencies and its aid organization allies were distributing shelter kits, tarps, warm covers and clothes as well as nutrition and hygiene items across Gaza, stated the UN office for the coordination of humanitarian affairs.

Most of Palestinians live in improvised tents since their houses were reduced to ruins during the war. Aid groups contend an insufficient amount of building supplies are entering Gaza during the ceasefire.

Casualty Figures After the Truce

The Gaza health ministry, part of the Hamas-run government, reports more than 440 individuals have been fatally shot by gunfire and their remains taken to hospitals since the truce began. The authority keeps comprehensive fatality data that are seen as largely accurate by international bodies and independent experts.

James Elder, spokesperson for the UN children’s agency Unicef, said on that day that no fewer than 100 minors under the age of 18 – 60 boys and 40 females – had been killed after the truce began because of military operations, such as unmanned aerial vehicle attacks, air raids, artillery fire and employment of live ammunition. These numbers, he explained, reflected cases where enough details had been compiled to warrant recording, but the overall count is believed to be greater. He added that many hundreds of minors had been injured.

"While 'explosions and shootings have slowed' during the truce, they have not ceased," the spokesperson told journalists at a press conference in Geneva by video link from Gaza City. "So what the international community now terms calm would be considered a crisis anywhere else," he said.

Another Cold Season of Struggle

Gaza’s residents of more than 2 million individuals has been fighting to keep the freezing temperatures and bad weather at bay while facing shortages of assistance and a lack of more substantial transitional shelter, which is badly required during the colder season. It’s the third cold season after the war involving the state and the group started on a date in late 2023, when fighters stormed into Israeli territory and murdered around 1,200 individuals and took hostage two hundred and fifty-one more into Gaza.

Gaza’s health ministry says more than seventy-one thousand four hundred Palestinians have been fatally injured in the subsequent retaliatory offensive.
