Zohran Mamdani Pledges a 'New Era' for NYC in Inaugural Address
On his initial day in office, Zohran Mamdani committed to “transform” the metropolis, declaring “a fresh chapter” and an audacious beginning to his term.
An Unprecedented Figure
The new political star, who just a year ago remained a virtually unknown state assemblyman, has become the city's first mayor of South Asian descent. He also made history by being the first to be sworn in using the Islamic holy text.
“A time such as this seldom arrives and rarer still is it that the people themselves whose hands are upon the controls for transformation,” Mamdani remarked.
Ignoring suggestions to lower expectations, the mayor asserted: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to redefine is that of small expectations. Beginning today we will govern with courage and vision.”

Mamdani openly embraced his political ideology. “I was elected as a democratic socialist and I will lead as one. I will not abandon my principles for worry of being called extreme,” he proclaimed to an enthusiastic response.
The ceremony was a two-part event, starting with a late-night oath-taking in a disused subway station. He was formally sworn in on the front steps of city hall by political ally Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's ascent as a victory over political establishments.
